Ernst Otto Fischer was a famous German chemist. He was born in Solln in 1918. He studied at the Technical University of Munich. He worked with organometallic chemistry. This is the study of metals mixed with carbon.

Fischer did important work with special shapes. He studied a substance called ferrocene. He found the right way it was built. He also found new things called nickelocene and cobaltocene. Later, he found a new class of things. We call these sandwich complexes. They are named for how they look.

His group also found Fischer carbenes. These are special metal groups. Fischer wrote about 450 papers. He also taught many students. He traveled to many places to give talks. He visited schools in the United States.

In 1973, he won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He shared this prize with Geoffrey Wilkinson. This is a very big honor for scientists. Fischer died in Munich in 2007. At that time, he was the oldest living German Nobel winner.
