Robert went to a school called MIT. He studied chemistry there. Later, he went to the University of Chicago. He worked with many great scientists. Some of them won big prizes too. In 1927, he worked with a man named Friedrich Hund. Together, they made a new idea. This idea is called molecular orbital theory.

This theory is a way to study molecules. Molecules are tiny parts of our world. Before this, scientists used a different way. That way was called valence-bond theory. But Mulliken's way was more flexible. It helped scientists study many kinds of molecules. Because of this work, he won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1966. He also won the Priestley Medal in 1983. Robert Mulliken lived to be 90 years old. He died in 1986.
