Paul Flory was a famous American chemist. He studied polymers. Polymers are very large molecules made of long chains.

Flory wanted to know how these chains behave in liquids. He found a key idea called excluded volume. This means one part of a chain cannot take up space that another part is already using. This idea helped explain many science puzzles.

He also found the theta point. This is a special set of conditions. At this point, the effect of excluded volume goes away. This lets scientists study the shape of the chains more easily.

Flory worked at many places. He worked for companies like DuPont and Goodyear. He also taught at Cornell and Stanford. In 1953, he wrote a book called Principles of Polymer Chemistry. Many scientists still use his book today.

He won many big awards. In 1974, he won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. This prize was for his great work with macromolecules. He also received the National Medal of Science from the President.
