He is best known for finding a way to join carbon atoms together. This is a very important task in the study of chemistry. Scientists call this the Grignard reaction. It helps them build new things by making carbon-carbon bonds. This discovery changed how people make many different substances. Because of this work, he won a very special award.

The way his reaction works happens in two main steps. First, a person makes a Grignard reagent. This is an organomagnesium compound. It is made by mixing magnesium metal with something called an organohalide. Next, a person adds a ketone or an aldehyde to the mix. The carbon atom moves to the new part. This process is a type of nucleophilic addition. Finally, adding acid turns the mixture into an alcohol.

Grignard had a very interesting life journey. He was the son of a man who made sails. He was a hard student who loved math. He even tried to study math at a university. After serving in the army, he earned a math degree in 1894. Then, he moved into the world of chemistry. He worked with professors named Philippe Barbier and Louis Bouveault. In 1900, he discovered his famous reaction.

Many important dates mark his career. In 1901, he published his big doctoral thesis. He became a professor at the University of Nancy in 1910. In 1912, he won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He shared this prize with Paul Sabatier. During World War I, he did important research. He found a way to detect mustard gas using sodium iodide. This test could find 0.01 gram of gas in a cubic meter of air.

Grignard's work connects to many things we use today. By 1935, scientists had written 6,000 papers about his reaction. This shows how much people use his ideas. His work helps make the chemicals used in many products. He was a humble and friendly man. He also received the Legion of Honour for his achievements. He died in Lyon in 1935 at the age of 64.
