Taqlid is a special word used in Islamic law. It describes when one person follows the teachings of another person. The word comes from an Arabic root that means to imitate. Some people believe the term comes from the idea of being led by a collar. A person who practices taqlid is called a muqallid. Someone who does not follow this practice is called a ghair-muqallid. This idea helps people decide how to live their lives.

How taqlid works depends on what a person knows. Some people are experts called mujtahids. These experts use independent reasoning to understand religious rules. A mujtahid can perform ijtihad, which is a type of deep thinking. Most people are not experts like this. They follow the guidance of a mujtahid instead. This helps them make correct choices in their daily lives. It is a way for people to find direction.

Different groups of Muslims have different views on this practice. In Sunni Islam, taqlid is often seen as necessary. This is true for people who are not mujtahids. Sunni scholars use the Qur'an to support this idea. They believe people should ask those with knowledge for help. There is a story about Muhammad and a companion with a head injury. The companion died because he did not ask for help first. Muhammad said the only remedy is to inquire.

Some groups view taqlid in a negative way. Salafi and Wahhabi scholars often reject it. They believe people should use ijtihad more often. They may call taqlid "blind imitation." Some Salafi scholars like Sanaullah Amritsari have even called it disbelief. This is because they feel it stops new thinking. They want people to study the rules for themselves. This shows how different thinkers can see the same word differently.

In Shia Islam, taqlid is a very important part of life. For Twelver Shia, it became a requirement after 941 CE. This was after a time called the greater occultation. Shia followers look to a source of guidance called a marja' at-taqlid. This expert provides advice on matters of religious law. However, they do not use taqlid for matters of belief. They only use it for rules known as sharia. This helps them stay connected to their traditions.
