In the Catholic faith, people talk about two kinds of sin. One kind is called a venial sin. The word venial means it is forgivable. These sins are not very serious. They do not break a friendship with God. But they can hurt that bond.

A sin is venial if the act is not grave. Grave means it is a very serious matter. Even if a person knows it is wrong, it stays venial if it is not grave. A thinker named Thomas Aquinas said these sins are like things that are imperfect.

To find out if a sin is mortal, people ask three questions. First, was the act a grave matter? Second, did the person know it was wrong? Third, did the person choose to do it? If the answer to any question is no, it is a venial sin.

Each venial sin adds to the penance a person must do. Penance is a way to show regret. People can get grace to help them stop. Grace is a special help from God. Many believe that small sins can weaken a person's will. This can lead to bigger sins later.
