An indulgence is a way to reduce punishment for sins. In this faith, sins have two parts. There is the guilt of the sin. There is also the temporal punishment. This is a kind of cleaning for the soul. It helps a person become more holy.

To get an indulgence, a person must do something special. They might say a specific prayer. They might also go on a pilgrimage, which is a special journey. Some people visit a shrine or a church. They can also do good works to show love. There are two types. A partial indulgence helps a little bit. A plenary indulgence is meant to remove all temporal punishment.

In the past, there were big problems with this. Some people used indulgences to raise money. This was an abuse of the system. Martin Luther and others spoke out against this. Later, the Church made new rules. They stopped people from tying indulgences to money. Today, they help people focus on charity and prayer.
