In Christian theology, people talk about two different things. One is faith, which is an inner quality. The other is good works, which are a person's outer actions or deeds. Many different groups of Christians have different ideas about these works. Some see them as a result of faith. Others see them as a necessary part of salvation. It is a big topic that many thinkers have studied for a long time.

Different traditions explain how these works function in a believer's life. For example, Anabaptists teach about a "faith that works." They believe being a disciple means following New Testament commands. This can include things like baptism or washing feet. They believe that faith without works is a dead faith. They see these actions as evidence of a person's change. This process helps a believer live more like Jesus.

History shows how these ideas have shifted over many centuries. In the 16th century, the Anglican tradition had many views. The Thirty-nine Articles from 1571 said people are made righteous by faith. They said this is not because of human work. Later, the Oxford Movement in the 19th century changed some views. They used the idea of "Tracts for the Times" in 1841. This helped connect faith with outward things like Baptism.

Many specific groups hold very clear beliefs about these actions. The Catholic Church teaches that both faith and works are needed. Eastern Orthodox Churches also see them as a unity. The Coptic Orthodox Church says works are the fruit of the Holy Spirit. Baptist churches see works as a sign of a grateful faith. They include things like service and charity. These works are seen as a consequence of being saved.

Other groups like the Lutherans and Methodists have unique views too. Lutherans believe good works are the fruit of a person's repentance. They teach that God rewards the good things Christians do. Methodists follow the teachings of their founder, John Wesley. He taught that following the Ten Commandments is very important. Methodists believe that true faith will lead to good behaviors. They see a progressive growth in grace through a consistent life.
