Salvation is the state of being protected from harm or a very bad situation. In the study of religion, this idea is called soteriology. Many people use the word to describe saving a soul from sin and its effects. This might include being delivered from spiritual death or separation from a god. Different faiths have very different ways of explaining how this happens. Some believe it comes from grace, while others focus on good deeds or faith.

In Judaism, the idea is often called redemption. This means being saved from circumstances that destroy the value of human life. Many Jews do not believe in original sin like some other religions do. Instead, they focus on individual morality and following the laws in the Torah. These laws were given to Moses on Mount Sinai. Salvation is often tied to the destiny of the people of Israel. It is also connected to the idea of restoration for the whole community.

Christianity holds that salvation is possible through Jesus Christ. Christians believe his life and death on the cross were part of a divine plan. This plan was made by God before the world was even created. Some believe salvation is a process that happens over a person's entire life. They might say they have been saved, are being saved, and will be saved. Different groups, like Catholics or Protestants, may disagree on the exact details. However, most agree that the work of Jesus makes salvation possible.

Islam teaches that salvation leads to entering Paradise. To receive this, Muslims believe they must die believing in the one God. This includes the principle of Tawhid, which means believing only in God's unique attributes. People must also direct all their worship and prayers to God alone. Islam teaches that humans have an inclination toward sin and should seek forgiveness. Doing good deeds and following the Five Pillars are also very important. Every person is responsible for their own actions and sins.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has its own plan of salvation. They believe people can be saved by accepting the grace of Jesus Christ. This can happen during life or in the world of spirits for those who have died. Members perform special work in temples to help others receive these blessings. This idea connects to many different sacred books, including the Bible and the Book of Mormon. Across many different traditions, the goal is often to find peace or a way to be right with the divine.
