The Great Commandment is a very important idea in religious history. It is a name used in the New Testament. This name describes a special rule given by Jesus of Nazareth. He spoke about this rule in three different books. These books are the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke.

Many people find these words very meaningful. They help explain how to live a good life.

How does this commandment work in daily life? The first part is about loving God. Jesus said the Lord is our God and the Lord is one. The second part is about loving your neighbor. Most Christian groups believe these two rules go together. They think these rules form the core of the Christian religion. Some people also see the second rule as a form of the Golden Rule.

These ideas have a very long history. They both come from the Old Testament. They were meant to be followed by Jews and followers of Jesus. One part of the rule comes from a Jewish prayer. This prayer is called the Shema Yisrael. It is part of the first commandment.

Observant Jews say this prayer twice every day. They say it during morning and evening prayers.

The source of these rules includes specific parts of the Bible. The words come from the books of Deuteronomy and Leviticus. The Shema Yisrael says to love God with all your heart. It also says to love Him with all your soul and might.

A Rabbi named Adin Even-Israel Steinsaltz shared a special thought. He said people should act so that God is loved by all creatures. He said this can be done through deeds of kindness. This idea is linked to the actions of Abraham.

These commandments link many different ideas together. They connect ancient laws to how people act today. The rules help people understand their duty to God and others. Some thinkers look at how these rules relate to each other. They might look at the seven rules of Hillel. One of those rules is called Kal wa-ḥomer.
