The Great Commandment is a very important idea. It comes from the New Testament. Jesus spoke about these rules in three books. These books are Matthew, Mark, and Luke.

Jesus said the first and greatest rule is to love God. He said the Lord is one God. He also shared a second rule. This rule is to love your neighbor. Many people see these two rules as the core of the Christian faith.

These ideas come from the Old Testament. They were meant for Jews and followers of Jesus to obey. One part of the rule comes from a prayer called the Shema Yisrael. This prayer says to love God with all your heart. It also says to love Him with all your soul and might.

Some people think of the second rule as a Golden Rule. A Rabbi named Adin Even-Israel Steinsaltz had a thought about these rules. He said people should act in ways that make God loved by all. This can be done through acts of kindness. These rules help people think about how to live well.
