Jehovah is a special name used for the God of Israel.

This name comes from a Hebrew word made of four letters.

Scholars call these four letters the Tetragrammaton. Many people believe this name is a personal name for God. It is different from other words like Elohim. Some thinkers say Elohim is a more general word for a supreme being. However, they believe Jehovah is a much more specific and personal name. It is a name that belongs to only one God.

How this name is said has changed over a very long time.

In the past, people stopped saying the name out loud. During the Second Temple period, between the 3rd and 2nd centuries BCE, people avoided the name. They used the word "Lord" or "Adonai" instead to show respect. Later, workers called Masoretes added vowel points to the four letters.

They did this to show which substitute words to use. This process eventually helped create the form we call Jehovah.

The history of the name involves many different languages and eras.

Many scholars believe the original way to say the name was Yahweh. The form "Jehovah" is what some call a hybrid form. This means it was made by mixing the four Hebrew letters with vowels from other words. The spelling "Iehovah" appeared around the 12th century CE. Later, the form "Iehouah" appeared in 1530 in a translation by William Tyndale. Eventually, the spelling changed to the "Jehovah" we see in many books today.

Different Bibles and traditions use this name in various ways.

The 1611 King James Version uses the name seven times. The Geneva Bible from 1560 also uses it several times. Some newer versions, like the New World Translation, use it in both parts of the Bible.

Most mainstream English Bibles use "Lord" instead of the name. However, some people still prefer the name Jehovah for its long history. They feel it carries a deep meaning that other words do not have.

Today, the name is still found in many parts of life.

You can hear it in famous Christian hymns. For example, the hymn "Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah" was written in 1771. Some people also find versions of the name in very old magical texts. These texts use names like "Iaō" which are related to the original Hebrew. Even though people disagree on the best way to say it, the name remains very important. It connects modern readers to ancient history and deep religious beliefs.
