society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

An oath of office is a very serious promise. A person makes this vow before they start a new job. Most people take these oaths when they work in government. Some people also take them in religious groups.

These oaths are often required by law. A person might not be allowed to use their power until the promise is made. The ceremony can be a large public event like an inauguration. Sometimes the promise is made in private instead. A person might use a holy book, such as a Bible, during the ceremony. They might say "I swear" or use the words "I solemnly affirm."

Oaths show that a person is loyal. They might promise to support a constitution. A constitution is a set of important rules for a country. In some places, breaking this promise is a very serious crime. Some leaders also take an oath of secrecy. This means they will not tell private details about their meetings. In Antigua and Barbuda, leaders promise not to reveal the business of the Cabinet.

This helps keep the government working well.

Different countries have their own special ways to do this. In Belgium, the King does not have a coronation. Instead, he swears a constitutional oath in the Palace of the Nation. He does this in three different official languages. He promises to protect the independence of the country.

Other people in Belgium, like ministers, also swear oaths. They may do this in front of the King or their own parliament.

Many places use specific words for their promises. In Australia, members of Parliament take an oath before they can sit in their seats. This is required by the Australian Constitution. In Bangladesh, the President and Prime Minister take their oaths in the Bengali language.

In Brazil, the President and Vice President use an affirmation. When members of the Chamber of Deputies answer, they say, "So I promise." This is a way to show they accept their new duties.

Oaths connect people to the rules of their land. In Canada, the Governor General must swear to follow the law. They do this to represent the monarch. This often happens in the Canadian Senate chamber.

Even teachers in some parts of Belgium take an oath. They say it to their school headmaster. These promises help everyone understand their roles. They show that leaders will do their jobs fairly and honestly.
