Abjuration

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Abjuration is a very serious and formal act. It means to give up a right or a belief. People often did this by taking a solemn oath. This word comes from the Latin word abjurare. That word means to forswear something.

Sometimes people used an abjuration to leave a country. In ancient English law, this was called abjuration of the realm. A person would swear to leave the land immediately. They could not return without permission from the king.

History shows that these oaths could be very difficult. In England, Parliament passed a new rule in 1643. This included an oath known as the Oath of Abjuration. By 1656, the rules became even harder for Catholics. If they refused the oath, they were called Papists. The state could take two-thirds of their goods. They could also lose almost every civic right. This made it very hard for many people to live normally.

In Scotland, the oaths were used in a scary way. During the 1680s, a time called The Killing Time, people faced hard choices. They were asked to renounce their old allegiances. The terms were made to go against their religious feelings. If they did not swear the oath, they could be killed. This happened through a process called a field trial. On May 1, 1685, a man named John Brown was killed this way.

Other famous abjurations changed how whole lands were ruled. In 1581, the Low Countries took a big step. They signed the Plakkaat van Verlatinghe, or the Act of Abjuration. This was a declaration of independence from King Philip II of Spain. It was a major part of the Eighty Years' War.

Another event happened in 1203 at Bilino Polje. Seven Bosnian priors signed a document there near Zenica. They affirmed the power of the pope. This happened in the presence of Ban Kulin and Giovanni da Casamari.

These oaths show how much power a government can hold. In Great Britain, oaths were used to support the monarch. They were used under kings like William III and George I. In Ireland, these oaths were required for many jobs. Teachers, lawyers, and even voters had to take them. This shows how promises can shape a whole society. It also shows how people have fought to protect their beliefs.
