Excommunication is a serious religious act used by many different groups. It is a way to limit a person's membership in a religious community. This often means they lose certain rights within that faith. For example, they might not be allowed to join in special ceremonies. They might also be stopped from receiving sacraments, which are holy acts.

Some groups use this to protect their members from bad teachings. Others use it to help a person see their mistakes. The main goal is often to encourage the person to change.

Different religions have their own ways of doing this. The Amish use a practice called shunning for those who break rules. Jehovah's Witnesses use a term called disfellowship for their version. In the Bahá'í Faith, this act is very rare and very serious. It is only used to stop people from breaking the unity of the group.

Bahá'ís call these people "Covenant-breakers." The Universal House of Justice is the only group that can make this decision. Even family members are expected to shun these individuals.

In the Catholic Church, there are two main ways it happens. One way is called automatic, which happens the moment a rule is broken. The other way happens when a leader or a court declares it.

An excommunicated person might be stopped from holding church offices. They might also be barred from certain parts of a worship service. However, they are still considered members of the church in some ways. They are still expected to follow certain religious duties.

History shows many famous moments involving this practice. In 1521, Pope Leo X excommunicated Martin Luther.

In 1903, Pope Leo XIII excommunicated Isabelo de los Reyes.

There are also different rules in the Eastern Catholic Churches. They have "minor" and "major" levels of excommunication. Minor excommunication might stop someone from entering a church during worship. Major excommunication is much stricter and removes many more rights.

Most religious groups allow people to return to the community. This usually happens when a person shows they are truly sorry. In the Catholic Church, this is called absolution. A priest or a bishop can lift the penalty.

The person might need to say a special prayer or a creed. This process helps bring the person back into the group. It turns a moment of separation into a moment of healing.
