If someone breaks a rule, they may be sent away. This is called excommunication. It means they cannot join in special church things.

This can happen in many faiths. For example, the Amish use shunning. This means people stay away from someone who breaks rules.

In the Catholic Church, it can be automatic. This happens the moment a rule is broken. Other groups use a vote to decide.

Some people may be sent away for a long time. But they can come back. They do this by saying they are sorry.

Rules help groups stay together. Do you follow rules at home?
