Parsifal is a grand music drama written by the German composer Richard Wagner.

It was his very last composition. Wagner wrote his own text, called a libretto, for the show. The story is based on old tales of knights. One source is a 13th-century poem by Wolfram von Eschenbach. Another source is a 12th-century tale by Chrétien de Troyes. These stories follow a knight named Parzival. He goes on a spiritual quest to find the Holy Grail.

Wagner did not call this an opera. Instead, he called it a sacred festival stage play.

Writing this music was a very long and careful task. Wagner first thought of the idea in April 1857. He did not finish the work until 1882. This took twenty-five years of his life. He worked on the music in many different steps. First, he wrote a prose draft with plot outlines. Later, he turned this into a verse libretto. He then made two complete musical drafts. The first draft was done in pencil on three staves. The second draft was much more detailed and used ink.

He finished the final full score in 1882.

Wagner's interest in the story came from many places. In 1845, he read a poem about Parzival while in Marienbad. Later, he read the writings of Arthur Schopenhauer. These books made him interested in Indian philosophies like Buddhism. He even wrote a sketch called Die Sieger about the life of Buddha. These ideas about compassion and rebirth helped shape Parsifal.

The themes of the play connect to these deep thoughts. Wagner used his time to think about these big ideas. He even used a special cottage in Zürich to find inspiration.

The first full performance happened in 1882 at the Bayreuth Festspielhaus.

This theater was built specifically for his music. The first show was led by the conductor Hermann Levi. The production used a huge orchestra of 107 people. There was also a chorus of 135 singers. Twenty-three soloists performed the main parts. The stage designs were based on real places. For example, the Grail hall looked like the Siena Cathedral. Klingsor's magic garden was modeled after a palace in Ravello.

Parsifal has many special traditions and rules. At the Bayreuth Festival, audiences do not clap after the first act. This started because of a misunderstanding. Wagner wanted to keep a serious mood during the show. He told the actors not to take bows until the end. The audience thought he meant they should stay silent.

For many years, only Bayreuth could show the play. This changed in 1903 when the Metropolitan Opera in New York staged it. Today, the music is still performed in many opera houses. People still come from all over to hear this famous work.
