Tannhäuser is a famous opera written by Richard Wagner. An opera is a stage story told through music and singing.

This work is special because it explores deep themes. It looks at the struggle between sacred and worldly love. It also explores how love can lead to redemption. These ideas are very important in much of Wagner's music. Today, the opera is still a staple in major opera houses around the world.

The story is built from two different German legends. One legend is about a medieval poet named Tannhäuser. He was a knight and a singer known as a Minnesänger.

The second legend is about a song contest at Wartburg castle. Wagner combined these myths into one big plot. He used the myth of Venus and her underground realm called Venusberg. This mix of history and myth creates a very rich world.

Wagner spent many years working on this music. He wrote the prose draft in the summer of 1842. He finished the libretto, which are the sung words, in April 1843. He worked on the music in a place called Teplitz.

He completed the full score on April 13, 1845. Writing the music for the Venusberg was very hard work. Wagner even felt ill from the intense effort of composing it.

The opera has several different versions from its history. The first version played in Dresden on October 19, 1845.

Later, Wagner made a big version for Paris in 1861. This version included a ballet, which is a dance performance. He placed the ballet in the first act to show Venus's world. This Paris version was difficult because some audience members were very loud. They used whistles and catcalls during the performances.

Many different musicians have brought this story to life. The first Tannhäuser was sung by Josef Tichatschek. The role of Venus was first sung by Wilhelmine Schröder-Devrient. Wagner used many instruments to create his unique sound. He used 12 German Waldhorns, which are a type of horn. He also used the harp, which is common in French opera.
