Tannhäuser is a famous opera written by Richard Wagner. An opera is a stage story told through music and singing.
The story is built from two different German legends. One legend is about a medieval poet named Tannhäuser. He was a knight and a singer known as a Minnesänger.
Wagner spent many years working on this music. He wrote the prose draft in the summer of 1842. He finished the libretto, which are the sung words, in April 1843. He worked on the music in a place called Teplitz.
The opera has several different versions from its history. The first version played in Dresden on October 19, 1845.
Many different musicians have brought this story to life. The first Tannhäuser was sung by Josef Tichatschek. The role of Venus was first sung by Wilhelmine Schröder-Devrient. Wagner used many instruments to create his unique sound. He used 12 German Waldhorns, which are a type of horn. He also used the harp, which is common in French opera. These sounds help tell the grand story of the knight and the singers.
Tannhäuser is a grand opera written by the German composer Richard Wagner. An opera is a theatrical work where the story is told through singing and orchestral music.
The narrative structure is built by combining two distinct German legends. One legend concerns the mythologized medieval German poet and knight named Tannhäuser. He was a Minnesänger, which is a type of lyric poet and singer from the Middle Ages.
Wagner's creative process involved several years of intense labor and research. He wrote a prose draft of the story between June and July of 1842. He then completed the libretto, the written text for the singers, in April 1843. The composition of the music took place largely during a vacation in Teplitz in the summer of 1843. Wagner finished the full musical score on April 13, 1845.
Because of its long history, the opera exists in several distinct versions. The first version premiered at the Königliches Hoftheater in Dresden on October 19, 1845. This version is often called the "Dresden version." Wagner later made massive revisions for a special performance at the Paris Opéra in 1861.
The Paris premiere was a very difficult period for the composer. Although the production involved 164 rehearsals, the audience responses were often hostile. Members of the wealthy Jockey Club were unhappy that the ballet was in the first act. This change meant they had to arrive early and missed their dining schedules. Some audience members even distributed whistles to disrupt the show. After the third performance, which saw interruptions lasting up to fifteen minutes, Wagner withdrew the opera from Paris. This event ended his hopes of establishing himself in the French capital.
Further versions emerged as Wagner continued to refine his work. In 1875, he made changes for a performance in Vienna. This "Vienna version" is the one most commonly used in modern productions of the Paris version. It includes the return of certain musical parts, such as a solo for the character Walther. The instrumentation also reflects a blend of styles. While Wagner used 12 German Waldhorns, he also included the harp, a common element in French operatic style. These specific musical choices help define the unique atmosphere of the stage.
The characters in the opera are defined by specific vocal roles. The title role of Tannhäuser is a central figure, though in the libretto, characters often call him by his given name, Heinrich. The role of Venus is a major part of the drama. In the Dresden version, Venus was written for a soprano voice. However, for the Paris version, Wagner rewrote the role for a mezzo-soprano. These vocal shifts show how much Wagner adapted the music to fit different theatrical needs and traditions.
