Other parts, like the orchestral preludes, are also played in concerts.

The story is based on old German legends about a Swan Knight. It draws from medieval poems like Parzival by Wolfram von Eschenbach.

The plot focuses on a knight who comes to protect a duchess. He has one very important rule for her to follow. She must never ask for his real name. If she breaks this rule, he is forced to leave her forever. This creates a tragic theme about the struggle between humans and the divine. Wagner wanted to weave these ideas into a story like a Greek tragedy.

Wagner began working on the music between 1845 and 1848. He was working as a music director at the Royal Dresden court at that time.

The idea for the opera actually started much earlier while he lived in Paris. He was inspired by a book of legends by Ludwig Bechstein. This book helped him see the character of Lohengrin clearly in his mind. He felt a strong need to turn these old stories into a beautiful musical work. He even described the idea as a seed that grew into a large flower.

Writing the opera was a long and careful process for Wagner. He first wrote a prose draft by August 3, 1845. He then worked on different drafts of the poem and the music. He actually finished the draft for Act III before he finished Acts I and II.

He spent a lot of time making sure the tragedy felt right. He even argued with his friend Franck about how the characters should act. Wagner wanted the separation of the lovers to feel very powerful. He finished the full musical score on April 28, 1848.

This opera has left a lasting mark on history and culture. King Ludwig II of Bavaria was a great supporter of Wagner. The King loved the legend so much that he named his famous Neuschwanstein Castle after the Swan Knight. This support helped Wagner finish his huge musical cycles later on. Today, the original handwritten manuscript is kept safe in the Richard Wagner Foundation. People all over the world still enjoy the music and the story. It remains a very important piece of musical history.
