It is the second part of a massive four-part cycle. This cycle is called Der Ring des Nibelungen. The composer was Richard Wagner. He wrote the words by July 1852. He finished the music by March 1856. This work tells a story of gods and heroes. It is based on old Norse myths.

People love it because the music feels very deep. It can be seen as one single show. Many people also enjoy it as part of the whole cycle.

Wagner used a special way to write the music. He used things called leitmotifs. These are short musical themes. They represent specific people, ideas, or even situations. The music works to show the feelings behind the words. Instead of just singing songs, the music interprets the mood. This makes the drama feel very alive.

In one part, the Valkyries sing together in a large group. This shows how Wagner could be flexible with his rules. The music helps the audience understand what characters are thinking.

The story follows the twins Siegmund and Sieglinde. They were separated when they were very small. They meet again as adults and fall in love. This love makes the gods very angry. Wotan is the ruler of the gods. He has a daughter named Brünnhilde. She is a Valkyrie.

Valkyries are beings who find heroes in battle. They bring these heroes to a place called Valhalla. Brünnhilde decides to help the twins even when it is dangerous.

Wagner began his big project in October 1848. He first wrote a plan for a hero named Siegfried. He wanted to make a series of music dramas. Each drama would tell one stage of the story. He planned to perform them all at a special festival.

The first performance was in Munich on June 26, 1870. This was done because King Ludwig II of Bavaria asked for it. The first full cycle happened later in August 1876. This was at the Bayreuth Festspielhaus.

This music drama connects to the world of old legends. The story comes from the Völsunga saga. It also comes from the Poetic Edda. These are very old collections of myths. The characters feel like they belong in a grand world.
