The story follows a brave young man named Siegfried. He lives with a dwarf named Mime in a forest cave. Mime wants Siegfried to kill a dragon to get a magic ring. Siegfried needs a strong sword for this hard job. Mime tries to make a sword, but he fails. Siegfried must shred metal and melt it to forge his own sword. He calls this new sword Nothung.

Many different characters appear in this drama. Siegfried is a tenor, which is a high male voice. Mime is a tenor, while Alberich is a baritone. The dragon Fafner is played by a bass voice. A very important character is Brünnhilde, a high soprano. In the first show, the conductor was Hans Richter. The music uses special themes called leitmotifs. One theme is for the Nibelung people.

Siegfried's journey is full of magic and wonder. After he fights the dragon, he tastes its hot blood. This gives him the power to understand a woodbird. The bird leads him to a rock surrounded by fire. There, he finds a woman named Brünnhilde sleeping in armor. When he sees her, he feels love for the first time. This love makes him feel fear, which is a brand new feeling for him. He wakes her with a kiss to start a new age.
