It serves as the first part of a huge four-part story cycle called Der Ring des Nibelungen. This work is special because it sets the stage for everything else in the cycle. It tells the background stories that drive the main dramas later on. People all over the world still watch it in many opera houses today. It remains a very popular part of the musical world.

The music works in a very clever way to tell the story. Wagner used a system of recurring musical themes called leitmotifs. These leitmotifs represent specific people, ideas, or even certain situations. Instead of just singing words, the music interprets the deep emotions of the characters. This helps the audience feel the moods behind the action. Even though it follows new rules, it still uses some group singing. For example, the Rhinemaidens often sing together in an ensemble.

The story begins deep under the water in the Rhine River. Three river nymphs, known as Rhinemaidens, play near the shining Rhinegold.

A dwarf named Alberich arrives and tries to win their affection. After they mock him, he decides to renounce love to gain power. He steals the gold and makes a magic ring from it. This ring gives the wearer power to rule the whole world. Alberich also uses the ring to enslave the Nibelung dwarves.

Much of the drama involves the gods and their many problems. Wotan is the ruler of the gods and lives in a castle called Valhalla.

He owes a debt to two giants named Fasolt and Fafner. To pay them, Wotan tries to take the gold and the ring. When he takes the ring, Alberich places a terrible curse on it. This curse brings jealousy and even death to anyone who owns it. Even the earth goddess, Erda, warns Wotan that doom is coming.

Wagner worked on this music for a very long time. He actually finished the music for the score in 1854. However, he did not want to perform it until the whole cycle was done. He worked on the music on and off until 1874. The first time it was performed as a single opera was in Munich in 1869. Later, in August 1876, the full cycle premiered at the Bayreuth Festspielhaus. This helped make the Ring cycle a famous part of history.
