Western Christians fought to take the Holy Land. This land was under Muslim rule. Pope Urban II started the first trip. He spoke to a crowd in 1095. He promised spiritual rewards to those who went. Many people sewed a cross on their clothes. This showed they were part of the movement.

Keeping these lands was very hard. Many more trips were sent to help. Some trips failed, like the one in 1101. A leader named Saladin later took control. He united Egypt and Syria. This led to the Third Crusade. Jerusalem stayed under Muslim control after that. Later, the Mamluks took the last strongholds in 1291. The era of these large wars ended then.
