They set up four small lands in a place called the Levant. These lands were known as the Crusader states. Some people also called them Outremer. This name means "overseas."

The four lands were Edessa, Antioch, Tripoli, and Jerusalem. From north to south, they sat in parts of modern Turkey, Syria, and Lebanon. The Kingdom of Jerusalem was the largest and most famous.

Many different people lived in these lands. Most of the new settlers were called Franks. They spoke French and were Roman Catholic. The people already living there were very different. They spoke Arabic or Greek. They were Muslims, Jews, or other types of Christians.

These states did not last forever. One by one, they were lost to new leaders. Edessa fell first in 1144. Later, the Mamluks took the other lands. The last state, Jerusalem, fell in 1291. This ended their time in the region after nearly 200 years.
