These were called the Northern Crusades. Christian kingdoms from Europe wanted to change the religion of local people. These local groups were called pagans.

Many different groups lived in these lands. They included the Finns, the Balts, and the Slavs. Some wars were about religion. Other wars were to control trade and rich lands.

In the 1100s, leaders from Sweden and Denmark led campaigns. They fought to reach the Finnish people. In the late 1100s, a man named Meinhard went to Latvia. Later, Bishop Albert led a large group of soldiers. He wanted to make the area Catholic.

To keep control, soldiers built strong stone castles.

One famous place was the castle in Sigulda. These wars changed the region forever. Many people were forced to change their ways. New groups, like the Livonian Brothers of the Sword, were made to stay and fight. This changed how people lived and prayed in the north.
