This happened in the land of al-Andalus. This land is in modern Spain and Portugal. After the big state fell, many small kingdoms rose. We call these small kingdoms taifas.

Each taifa had its own ruler. These rulers often used the title hajib. They did not always call themselves kings. The taifas were very important for art. Rulers hired famous poets and scientists. These smart people helped culture grow.

Life was not always peaceful. The taifas often fought each other. They also fought with Christian kingdoms in the north. Some taifa rulers paid money to neighbors to stay safe. Other rulers made deals with Christian kings. To get help, some taifas asked for warriors from North Africa. These warriors came, but they took over the lands. This happened with the Almoravid and Almohad groups. By the end of the 1200s, most taifas were gone. Only one remained. It was the Emirate of Granada.
