These cities were called maritime republics. They were very special because they ruled themselves. They were also very rich from sea trade.

These cities built their own fleets of ships. They used special places called arsenals to make them.

The ships carried goods to far lands. They brought news and new ideas to Europe. They also helped connect Europe, Asia, and Africa. This helped people learn about distant places. Famous explorers like Marco Polo came from these cities.

Some cities were more powerful than others. Amalfi and Gaeta were strong early on. Later, Venice and Genoa became the most powerful. Pisa was also very important for a time. Other cities like Ancona and Ragusa grew strong too. These cities often competed with each other. Some even fought wars over trade. Over many years, their power slowly faded away. By the 1600s, their golden age had ended.
