It sits between Italy and the island of Corsica. The sea also borders France. To the east lies the Tyrrhenian Sea. To the west is the main Mediterranean Sea. The sea may be named after the ancient Ligures people.

Many animals live in these waters. Many whales and dolphins live here. Porpoises do not live in this part of the sea. To keep them safe, countries made a sanctuary. This protects the animals in the water.

The coast of Italy is very pretty. The northwest coast has nice views and weather. The city of Genoa is a big, important place here. You can find the ports of Genoa and La Spezia on the rocky coast. The Gulf of Genoa is the northern part of the sea. Some parts of the sea are very deep. The water moves in currents around the island of Corsica. These currents help move the water through the sea.
