It sits between the Italian Riviera and the island of Corsica. This sea also borders France. To the east, it meets the Tyrrhenian Sea. To the west, it connects to the main Mediterranean Sea. People think it was named after the ancient Ligures people. This area is a special part of the coast in Europe.

Water moves through this sea in many ways. Different types of water flow at different levels. Modified Atlantic Water moves across the surface. Deep down, the Levantine Intermediate Water flows instead. Two main currents also move around the island of Corsica. These are the Western Corsica Current and the Tyrrhenian current. This last one reaches the Corsica Channel. These movements help keep the sea active.

History and geography help us understand this place. The northwest coast is known for its views and weather. The Gulf of Genoa is the northernmost part of the sea. Genoa is the most important city in this area. You can find the ports of Genoa and La Spezia on the rocky coast. These ports are very useful for ships. The sea has many different shapes and limits.

The sea reaches a maximum depth of more than 2,500 meters northwest of Corsica. The International Hydrographic Organization sets the sea's borders. One line joins Cape Corse to the France and Italy border. Another line goes from Cape Corse to Tinetto Island. It then moves through the Tino and Palmaria Islands.

Many living things call this sea their home. Many species of whales and dolphins live in these waters. However, porpoises do not live in this part of the Mediterranean. To help these animals, countries worked together. They made the sea a special protected area in 1999. This is called the International Ligurian Sea Cetacean Sanctuary. It protects both the territorial waters and the high seas. This helps keep the whales and dolphins safe.
