More than 1.5 million people live in the wider area along the Italian Riviera. As of 2025, 565,301 people live within the city limits.

Many things make the city's layout special. The historical centre is one of the largest and most crowded in Europe.

It is famous for narrow lanes and streets called caruggi. These are small alleys that wind through the old town. In 2006, parts of the city were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. This includes the Le Strade Nuove area and the Palazzi dei Rolli. These sites show the grand buildings of the city's past.

History tells us that Genoa is very old. People have lived in this area since the fifth or fourth millennium BC.

This makes it one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Long ago, the ancient Ligures likely founded the first town on a hill. The city grew into a powerful maritime republic for over seven centuries. This era lasted from the 11th century until 1797. During this time, Genoa was one of the wealthiest cities in the world.

Wealthy families and banks helped the city grow. The Bank of Saint George was founded in 1407. It was the oldest known state deposit bank in the world.

This bank helped the city stay prosperous for many years. Genoa was also known for its trade and naval power. In the 14th century, the city was even credited with inventing blue jeans. Sailors used a tough fabric that worked well when wet or dry.

Many famous people were born in Genoa. The explorer Christopher Columbus was one of them.

The musician Niccolò Paganini and the architect Renzo Piano are also from here. The city is a center for learning too. The University of Genoa has a history going back to the 15th century. Today, it remains an important economic centre for Northwest Italy.
