The Strait of Messina is a narrow strip of water in Southern Italy.

It sits between the eastern tip of Sicily and the western tip of Calabria. This path connects the Tyrrhenian Sea in the north to the Ionian Sea in the south. It is part of the central Mediterranean. The water is very deep in some spots. Strong tidal currents move through the strait every day. These moving waters create a special home for many living things.

The moving water makes the strait a busy place for nature. Many fish use the strait to migrate through the Mediterranean Sea. Because of the unique water conditions, many special species live there. Deep sea fish like the Sloane's viperfish live in these waters. Sometimes, these fish are found on the shore at sunrise. The strait also acts like a bottleneck for birds. Over 300 bird species have been seen in this area.

Every year, millions of birds fly through this narrow space. They use the strait to reach breeding grounds in northern Europe. It is a very important place for raptors to fly. In one spring, scientists saw 35,000 raptors in the area. You might see honey buzzards or marsh harriers flying by. Some birds like flamingos and storks rest in the coastal salt lakes. People can watch these birds from the Peloritani mountains.

People have many ways to travel across the water today. Ferries connect the city of Messina on Sicily to Villa San Giovanni. These ferries are very useful for travelers. They can carry cars and even the mainline trains. These trains run between the cities of Palermo and Naples. There is also a fast hydrofoil service between Messina and Reggio Calabria. In 1957, a tall power line was built across the strait. The pylons are now protected as historical monuments.

For a long time, leaders have talked about building a huge bridge. This bridge would be about 3.3 km long and 60 m wide. It would have two pillars taller than the Empire State Building. The bridge would hold six lanes for cars and a railway for 200 trains. Some people want the bridge to create jobs and more tourism. Others worry about the strong winds and earthquakes in the area. They also worry about the 4.3 million birds that fly there each year. Construction is set to start in 2025 and finish by 2032.
