Ferry boats cross the water often. They travel between Patras and Igoumenitsa in Greece. They also go between Brindisi and Ancona in Italy.

The sea is a very active place. It has much seismic activity. This means the ground can shake.

The sea also has a very deep spot. We call this Calypso Deep. It is the deepest part of the Mediterranean Sea. It is 5,267 meters deep.

Ancient stories help explain the name. The name comes from a Greek word. Its exact start is not known. Some say it comes from a person named Io. She was a figure in Greek myth. Ancient writers said she swam across it. Other stories mention people named Ionius. One story says a hero named Heracles was there. He accidentally killed a son in a fight. The body was cast into the water. The sea was named after that event.

History has happened on these waters. The hero Odysseus is famous here. He was the king of Ithaca. Greeks sailed these waters in the 8th century BC. They went to make new colonies in Italy. Later, a big battle happened in 31 BC. This was the Battle of Actium. It was fought between Octavian and Mark Antony. Many naval battles happened in the east. Today, Greece controls the eastern part. Italy has controlled the western part since 1861.
