It sits west of the Greek mainland. The island of Kefalonia lies just to its north. Zakynthos has a very distinct shape. It looks like an arrowhead pointing northwest. The western side is a mountainous plateau with steep cliffs. The eastern side is a flat, fertile plain. This plain has many long, sandy beaches. The capital city is also called Zakynthos or Chora.

It sits on the northern coast of the eastern side.

The island has a mild Mediterranean climate. This means the summers are hot and sunny. The winters are mild and bring plenty of rain. This rain helps many green plants grow well. People here grow olives, grapes, and citrus fruit. One special plant is the Zante currant. This is a small, sweet, seedless grape.

The Bay of Laganas is a very important place for nature. It is a nesting area for loggerhead sea turtles. These turtles are part of the first National Marine Park in the area.

Zakynthos has a very long and busy history. Ancient poets like Homer wrote about the island in his stories. Long ago, the island was even called Hyrie. It was part of many different groups over the years. The Venetians ruled the island from 1484 to 1797. They even gave it a nickname. They called it "Fioro di Levante," which means Flower of the East.

Later, the island was part of the British Empire. It finally joined the country of Greece in 1864.

Many interesting things happen on the island due to its nature. The cliffs around Cape Skinari have blue caves carved into them. You can only visit these caves by using a small boat.

Another famous spot is Navagio beach. This cove is hidden by high cliffs on the northwest shore. You must take a boat to reach the sand there. There is also a mountain village called Keri. It features a lighthouse to help ships at sea. The island also has small, uninhabited islands nearby like Marathonisi. This tiny island is sometimes called Turtle Island.

Life on the island has changed through many different events. In 1953, a huge earthquake hit the island. This event destroyed most of the buildings that were there. Since then, people have strengthened all the buildings to keep them safe.

During World War II, the island saw brave actions too. A mayor and a bishop helped hide the local Jewish community. They helped almost all 275 Jewish people stay safe. Today, many people visit the island to see its sights. They fly in on planes to enjoy the sun and the sea.
