The tidal range is the difference in height between high tide and low tide.

This measurement tells us how much the sea level changes. It is very important for understanding our oceans. Scientists look at these changes to study the sea. The range depends on your time and your location. It can be very small or very large.

Tides happen because of several forces. The Moon and the Sun use gravity to pull on the water. The Earth's rotation also plays a part. There is also a force called centrifugal force. This happens as the Earth moves around a point called the Earth-Moon barycenter. These forces make the water rise and fall in a predictable way.

Different moon phases change how the water moves. During spring tides, the Moon and Sun align. This is called syzygy. This can happen during a new moon or a full moon. These tides create a very large range. Neap tides are the opposite. This happens when the Moon and Sun make a right angle. These tides have the smallest range.

Geography changes the size of the tide. Large bodies of water often have higher ranges. Some areas act like a funnel to make tides bigger. The Bay of Fundy in Canada has the largest mean tidal range. It is 16 meters at Burntcoat Head. Ungava Bay in Canada is also very large at 12 meters. The Bristol Channel in England and Wales has a range of 8 meters.

We use special names to group these ranges. A micro-tidal range is lower than 2 meters. A meso-tidal range is between 2 and 4 meters. A macro-tidal range is higher than 4 meters. Some huge ranges over 6 meters are called hypertidal. In some spots, the range is almost zero. These special spots are called amphidromic points.
