His uncle, Callixtus III, was elected pope in 1455. This event helped Rodrigo get important jobs very quickly. This practice of giving jobs to family members is called nepotism. Rodrigo was born in Xàtiva, which is in Spain. His family name was Borja, but in Italy, people called him Borgia. He used his influence to help his children and his relatives succeed.

In 1493, he issued special documents called papal bulls. These documents helped confirm the rights of the Spanish crown. This happened after Christopher Columbus found lands in the New World in 1492. He also used his power to support his son, Cesare Borgia. Alexander worked hard to make sure his family gained wealth and land. He was one of the wealthiest men of his time.

Many people today have strong and different opinions about him.

Some thinkers call him a controversial figure. This is because he had several children with women. His name became linked to ideas about using power for personal gain. Even so, his life shows how much influence the papacy held. He remains a central figure in the history of the Renaissance period.
