He was a member of the House of Borgia, a noble family from Valencia, Spain. His father was Rodrigo Borgia, who became the leader of the Church as Pope Alexander VI. Because of his family, Cesare lived a life filled with big changes and important roles. He was born in Subiaco, Italy, around 1475 or 1476.

His life is often studied because he moved between many different worlds.

At first, Cesare was trained to work in the Roman Catholic Church. He studied law in cities like Perugia and Pisa. Because of his father's high position, he became a bishop at a very young age. By the time he was 18, he was even made a cardinal.

A cardinal is a very important leader in the Church. However, Cesare eventually wanted a different kind of life. In 1498, he resigned from his Church duties. He wanted to become a military leader, also known as a condottiero.

Cesare used his father's influence to build his own lands in Italy. He worked with King Louis XII of France during the Italian Wars.

Around 1500, he began to take control of areas in Central Italy. He was appointed as the commander of the papal armies. He used many soldiers, including 300 cavalry and 4,000 Swiss infantry. Through these battles, he became the Duke of Romagna in 1501. Many citizens actually thought his rule was an improvement over the old leaders.

His rise to power was not always easy or peaceful. Cesare had to deal with many rivals and even his own generals. In 1502, some of his leaders planned against him. He responded by trapping them in a town called Senigallia. After his father, Pope Alexander VI, died in 1503, Cesare lost much of his support. A new leader, Pope Julius II, became his enemy. This made it very hard for Cesare to keep the lands he had won. He was eventually captured and sent to prisons in Spain.

Cesare's life was so interesting that it inspired famous writers. The historian Niccolò Machiavelli used Cesare as an example in his book, *The Prince*.

Cesare eventually escaped from a Spanish prison in 1506. He went to the kingdom of Navarre to help lead their soldiers. His life ended in 1507 during a heavy storm. He was caught in an ambush and died from a spear injury.
