Gonzalo Pizarro was a famous Spanish conquistador. A conquistador was a soldier who traveled to new lands. He was born in Trujillo, Spain, around the year 1510. He was the half-brother of Francisco Pizarro. Francisco was the leader who conquered the Inca Empire. Gonzalo was also related to Hernando and Juan Pizarro. These brothers worked together to take control of Peru.

Gonzalo joined his brother Francisco on a big trip in 1530. This was the third trip to conquer Peru. He served as a lieutenant for his older brother. The Pizarro brothers eventually captured the city of Cuzco on November 15, 1533. After this, Gonzalo and Juan became leaders in the city. They ruled Cuzco with a very harsh hand. They were often greedy and treated people unfairly. They used violence against those who did not follow them.

The way the Spaniards acted caused many problems. They treated the Inca people and their leaders very badly. This led to a large rebellion by the Inca people. The Incas even fought to take back Cuzco in May 1536. However, the Spanish soldiers had many heavy weapons. Gonzalo and Juan helped defeat the Inca forces. During these wars, a sickness called smallpox also spread. This disease caused many native people to die.

In 1539, Gonzalo was named vice-governor of Quito. He wanted to find a rich land called El Dorado. He also looked for a place called the Land of Cinnamon. He led a huge group of people on this trip. He had 170 Spaniards and 3,000 Native Americans with him. Later, he added 220 more Spaniards and 4,000 more natives. The trip was very hard and many people died. His helper, Francisco de Orellana, went a different way. Orellana ended up finding the huge Amazon River.

Later, the King of Spain sent new laws to Peru. These were called the New Laws. They were meant to protect the native people. Many conquistadors did not like these laws. Gonzalo led an army to fight against the King's representative. He won one battle near Quito in 1546. But soon, his own soldiers began to leave him. He lost a final battle near Cuzco. Gonzalo was killed by the King's army in 1548.
