Gonzalo Pizarro was a Spanish leader. He was a conquistador. A conquistador was a soldier who traveled to new lands.

Gonzalo went to Peru with his brothers. His brother Francisco led the way. Gonzalo and his brothers were often very mean. They treated the Inca people very badly. This caused the Inca people to fight back. They even took over the city of Cuzco for a short time. During these wars, many people died. A sickness called smallpox also spread. It killed many local people.

Gonzalo also led a trip to find gold. He looked for a place called El Dorado. Many of his men died during this trip. His helper, Francisco de Orellana, went on a different path. Orellana found the big Amazon River.

Later, the King of Spain made new laws. These laws were meant to help the native people. Gonzalo did not like these laws. He led an army to fight the King's men. But his soldiers left him. Gonzalo lost the fight. He was killed by the King's army in 1548.
