He ruled the Papal States from 1471 until he died in 1484. Born Francesco della Rovere, he came from a family in Celle Ligure. Before he became Pope, he was a very smart scholar. He studied philosophy and theology at the University of Pavia. He even taught at many different Italian universities. In 1467, Pope Paul II made him a cardinal. People chose him as Pope because he seemed very holy.

Sixtus IV did many big things to change Rome. He was a great patron of the arts. This means he gave money to help artists create beautiful work. He helped bring the early Renaissance style to the city. He started the building of the famous Sistine Chapel. He also created the Vatican Library to hold many books. To help the city, he rebuilt over 30 old churches. He also built the Ponte Sisto bridge across the Tiber River. He even fixed the Acqua Vergine to bring clean water to Rome.

One big part of his rule was helping his own family. This practice is called nepotism. Sixtus IV gave many important jobs to his relatives. He made six of his thirty-four cardinals his own nephews. His nephew Pietro Riario became very rich and powerful in Rome. Pietro even helped run the city for a time. Some people in history criticized Sixtus for this. They felt he cared too much about his family's power. He used his position to help his family gain land and wealth.

Sixtus IV also made important rules for different lands. In 1478, he created the Spanish Inquisition through a special document. He did this because of political pressure from Spain. He also had many disagreements with other kings and leaders. He fought with King Louis XI of France over church rules. He also had conflicts with leaders in Venice and Florence. One famous event was the Pazzi conspiracy in Florence. This was a plot to remove the Medici family from power. Sixtus was personally involved in this difficult time.

His life shows how much one person can change a city. He left behind many buildings that people still see today. His family, the Della Rovere, stayed powerful for a long time. The line of dukes in Urbino lasted until the year 1631. Even though he was a controversial leader, his work changed Rome. He helped turn the city into a center for art and learning. We can still see his impact in the streets and churches of Italy.
