His way of ruling involved both art and war. To protect himself, he organized the famous Swiss Guard in 1506. He also led military campaigns to gain more power for the Papal States. He fought to "free Italy from the barbarians" by pushing out foreign armies. He joined groups like the League of Cambrai to fight the Venetian Republic. Later, he formed the Holy League to remove French influence from Italy. He even personally led armed forces during the Siege of Mirandola.

Julius II was born Giuliano della Rovere in Albisola.

He came from a noble but not wealthy family. His uncle, Francesco della Rovere, became Pope Sixtus IV. This helped Giuliano rise quickly in the Church. He was made a bishop in 1471 and a cardinal shortly after. He held many different powerful offices at the same time. He was known to be a rough and coarse young man.

His reign left behind many famous things we see today.

In 1506, he started the rebuilding of St. Peter's Basilica. He allowed people to donate money to the Church for this work. He also established the Vatican Museums that same year. Julius II was a great patron of the arts. He asked Michelangelo to paint the Sistine Chapel in 1508. He also commissioned the Raphael Rooms for the artist Raphael.

His life connected many different parts of the world. He was interested in the New World and the Americas. He helped set up the first bishoprics in those lands. This began the spread of the Catholic faith in Latin America. His actions changed how politics worked in Italy and Europe. Even after he died, people wrote about his life. The writer Erasmus wrote a famous story about him. Julius II remains a huge figure in history because of his many roles.
