He lived during the Renaissance in Italy. He was born on September 21, 1452, in a place called Ferrara. His family was quite wealthy because of his grandfather's medical work. Savonarola actually studied to be a doctor first. He earned an arts degree at the University of Ferrara. However, he decided to change his life path. He wanted to become a "knight of Christ" instead.

His journey into religious life was very serious. He joined the Dominican Order in Bologna in 1475. He spent many years studying deep topics. These included logic, philosophy, and holy scriptures. He even wrote poems about the state of the world. He wanted to fix what he saw as corruption. He believed the Church needed a great renewal. He often spoke about the dangers of greed and envy.

Savonarola became a powerful voice in the city of Florence. In 1490, he moved back to the Convent of San Marco. He began preaching to very large crowds in the cathedral. He spoke about prophecies, which are predictions about the future. He told people that big changes were coming to the world. Many people called his followers the "Piagnoni," which means "Weepers."

He also spoke out against leaders who were mean to the poor. He wanted Florence to be a holy center for everyone.

Things became very tense when King Charles VIII of France invaded Italy in 1494. This event seemed to prove that Savonarola's predictions were coming true. Because of this, the people of Florence changed how they were ruled. They pushed out the Medici family and started a republic. Savonarola helped guide this new way of life. However, this caused trouble with the Pope in Rome. Pope Alexander VI was not happy with Savonarola's actions. The Pope eventually excommunicated him in May 1497.

Eventually, the situation in Florence reached a breaking point. In April 1498, a rival suggested a trial by fire to test him. This did not go well, and many people stopped supporting him. Savonarola and two other friars were taken to prison. On May 23, 1498, the authorities executed the three men in a public square.

Even after his death, his ideas remained important. Some thinkers later saw him as a person who helped start big religious changes in Europe.
