Hermann worked hard to make his group more powerful. Before he took over, the order had been in decline. This means the group was becoming less strong. Pope Honorius III recognized Hermann's great skills. The Pope gave the Teutonic Knights a high status. They became equal to the Knights Templar and the Knights Hospitaller. Hermann also helped move the knights into new lands. In 1211, he sent knights to defend Transylvania.

His life was full of many big travels and missions. Hermann joined the Fifth Crusade in 1219. He was even decorated for his bravery by King John of Brienne. Later, he helped convince Emperor Frederick II to go on the Sixth Crusade. Hermann even helped arrange the Emperor's marriage to Isabella. He also helped end a conflict called the War of the Keys. This helped the Emperor regain his standing with the Church. He was a bridge between the leaders of the world.

Hermann also helped the knights move into Prussia. He worked with Konrad I of Masovia to start this work. In 1230, the knights began a long campaign there. In 1237, he brought the Livonian Brothers of the Sword into his order. This made the Teutonic Knights even more widespread. He was likely born at Dryburg Castle in Langensalza. He was part of a family of leaders in Thuringia.

At the end of his life, Hermann was very tired. The knights in his group wanted him to stop his political work. He eventually retired to a place called Salerno. He died there on March 20, 1239. After he died, the Emperor and the Pope stopped talking to each other. This shows how important Hermann had been as a mediator. Today, people remember him with memorial plaques and marble statues.
