He is known as the founder of philology. Philology is a way to study human nature through the past. This field looks at history, writing, and art from ancient cultures. It combines the study of history with the study of language. Wolf believed these two things should work together as one whole piece. This helped people understand how ancient people lived and thought.

Wolf learned many subjects when he was young. He studied Latin and Greek at grammar school. He also learned French, Italian, Spanish, and music. At age eighteen, he went to the University of Göttingen. He wanted to study philology even though the school did not have that department yet. A teacher named Christian Gottlob Heyne did not like Wolf's ideas. Instead of giving up, Wolf used the university library to teach himself. He spent many hours reading and learning on his own.

Wolf spent much of his career at the University of Halle. He worked there from 1783 until 1807. During this time, he set the rules for his new field. He also led a special group for students called a philological seminarium. In 1789, he published a commentary on the works of Demosthenes. He also wrote a book called Prolegomena ad Homerum in 1795. This book caused some arguments with his old teacher, Heyne. Even with these hard moments, Wolf kept working on his ideas.

Life changed for Wolf after the French invasion of 1806. He had to leave his job at Halle and move to Berlin. A man named Wilhelm von Humboldt helped him in the new city. Wolf eventually took another teaching job, but it was not as successful. He wrote less during these later years of his life. He once wrote a major work called Darstellung der Alterthumswissenschaft. This book was mostly written while he was at the University of Halle. He worked very hard to organize all his knowledge about the past.

Wolf died while he was traveling to a city called Marseille. He was following medical advice to travel south at that time. He was buried in that area after he passed away. People wanted to remember his great work for many years. In 1840, a special medal was made to honor him.
