Wilhelm and Jacob were very close throughout their lives. As young boys, they shared a single bed and table. Later, as students at the University of Marburg, they shared a room. They lived under the same roof and shared their property. Even when Wilhelm married Henriette Dorothea Wild, his bond with Jacob stayed strong. A visitor named Richard Cleasby said they lived in great harmony. It seemed as if they were almost part of one family. They worked together on many important projects for many years.

Wilhelm had a very different personality than his brother. He was known as a happy and lively person. He loved to listen to music and tell stories. People often sought him out in social groups. He was very good at reading funny plays aloud.

Wilhelm faced some hard times during his life. As a boy, he was very healthy and strong. However, he later suffered a long and serious illness. This sickness left him feeling weak for the rest of his life. He also faced trouble in his professional work. In 1837, he joined a group called the Göttingen Seven. They were professors at the University of Göttingen. They protested against King Ernest Augustus of Hanover. The king accused them of breaking the rules. As a result, the king fired all seven men.

Wilhelm's family was also very involved in writing and learning. He and Henriette had four children together. One of their sons, Herman Friedrich, became a noted writer too. Wilhelm lived until he was 73 years old. He died in Berlin on December 16, 1859, from an infection.
