These tales are known as Kinder- und Hausmärchen, which means Children's and Household Tales. The books are very important to Western literature. They are even listed on the UNESCO Memory of the World Register. This means they are seen as a vital part of human history. People all over the world still read these stories today. They bring magic and history together in one place.

Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm worked very hard to gather these tales.

They did not just make the stories up themselves. Instead, they collected oral tales that people told to each other. They also looked through many old books to find them. They asked friends and acquaintances in Kassel to share stories. The brothers wanted to preserve German history and culture. They believed that old stories were a pure way to show a nation's spirit.

The brothers had a very difficult life while they were growing up. Their father died when Jacob was only eleven years old. This meant the family lost their main source of money. Jacob had to become the head of the household to help. Later, their mother also passed away in 1808. To support their family, the brothers studied for many hours every day. They even studied more than twelve hours a day at school. This hard work helped them eventually go to the University of Marburg.

The first book was published on December 20, 1812.

That first volume contained 86 stories. In 1815, they published a second volume with 70 more tales. The collection grew much larger as time went on. By the seventh edition in 1857, there were 210 tales in total. The brothers also changed some stories to make them better for children. For example, they changed a wicked mother into a stepmother in stories like Snow White. They also removed some parts that were not suitable for young readers.

These stories have inspired many different kinds of people. Many artists have made beautiful illustrations for the books. Artists like Arthur Rackham and Walter Crane created famous pictures.
