Hansel and Gretel is a famous German fairy tale about two siblings.

It was collected by the Brothers Grimm and published in 1812. The story follows a woodcutter's children during a time of famine. Their stepmother asks their father to leave them in the forest. This tale is part of a larger group of stories. These stories often feature children who must use their wits to escape.

They are known as ATU 327A tales in the study of folklore.

The plot begins when the children are lost in the woods. Hansel first uses shiny white pebbles to mark a path home. Later, he tries using bread crumbs, but birds eat them. This leaves the children wandering until they find a special house. This cottage has walls made of bread and a roof of cake.

A witch lives there and wants to eat the children. She locks Hansel in a stable and makes Gretel work. Gretel eventually saves her brother by pushing the witch into an oven. The children then find treasure and return home safely.

The Brothers Grimm gathered these stories from the Hesse region. They may have heard the tale in 1809 from a friend. Over many years, the brothers changed the story many times. They added more detail and made the story longer. In early versions, the children were called "Little Brother" and "Little Sister."

By the 1850 edition, the story had a different tone. They also changed the mother's role to be a stepmother.

Many different versions of this story exist around the world. In a French tale called "Finette Cendron," a girl uses thread to find her way. There is also a Swedish tale about a house made of cheese. A Danish version is called the "Pancake House." Some stories include a white duck to help the children cross water.

These different versions show how stories change as they travel. They all share the theme of children outsmarting a villain.

This story connects to many other famous legends and arts. For example, the breadcrumb path is like the thread used by Ariadne. The tale has even been turned into a famous opera. Engelbert Humperdinck wrote this opera, which premiered in 1893. People still enjoy these stories because they show how cleverness helps. Even though the themes can be dark, the children always find their way home. They show that being smart can solve very hard jobs.
