Rumpelstiltskin is a famous German fairy tale.

The Brothers Grimm first collected this story in 1812. It tells the story of a magical imp. This little creature can spin straw into real gold. The plot begins when a miller makes a big boast. He tells a king that his daughter can spin straw into gold. The king believes him and locks the girl in a room. The room is filled with straw and a spinning wheel.

The king demands she finish the task by morning. If she fails, the king threatens to kill her.

A little imp-like man appears to help the girl. He spins the straw for her in exchange for jewelry. First, he takes a necklace of glass beads. Later, he takes a glass ring. On the third day, the task becomes much harder. The king promises to marry the girl if she succeeds. However, he also threatens her life if she fails. The girl has nothing left to pay the imp. The creature then asks for her firstborn child as payment. She reluctantly agrees to this difficult deal.

The girl eventually becomes the queen.

When the queen has a baby, the imp returns. He wants to claim the child as his own. The queen offers him all her wealth instead. The imp refuses her riches and makes a new deal. He will leave if she can guess his name. She has three days to find the answer. The queen wanders into the woods to search. She finds a remote mountain cottage. There, she watches the imp dancing by a fire.

He sings a song that reveals his name.

The imp sings that his name is Rumpelstiltskin. When the queen says his name, he loses his temper. The story has different endings in different versions. In the 1812 edition, he simply runs away forever. The 1857 edition has a much more violent ending. In that version, he strikes the ground in a rage. Another version says he falls into a deep chasm. Some old oral versions say he flies away on a ladle. The name itself might mean "little rattle stilt."

This story pattern is found all over the world. Researchers believe the story might be 4,000 years old. Similar tales exist in the United Kingdom and Iceland. You can find versions in Scotland and Ireland too. There are even versions in Japan and Russia. These stories are often called "The Name of the Supernatural Helper." This is a special category for tales about magic names. Many cultures share this idea of a secret name. It shows how much people love these kinds of stories.
