Puss in Boots is a famous European fairy tale. It tells a story about a clever cat. This cat is an anthropomorphic animal, which means he acts like a human. He uses tricks and deceit to help his master. The master is a poor man who has very little. Through cleverness, the cat gains wealth and power for his owner. He even helps the man marry a princess.

The story usually begins with a poor miller who dies. He leaves his things to his three sons. The youngest son only gets a cat. The cat asks for a pair of boots and a sack. Then, the cat catches animals like rabbits and partridges. He gives these as gifts to a king. He tells the king the gifts are from the "Marquis of Carabas." This is a fake name for the poor son.

Many writers have shared this tale over the years. The oldest written version is by Giovanni Francesco Straparola. In his story, the cat is actually a disguised fairy. He helps a boy named Costantino from Bohemia. Another version was published by Giambattista Basile in 1634. The most popular version came from Charles Perrault in 1697. Perrault was a retired civil servant in France. His version is the one many people know today.

Scholars call this a "cat helper" story. This means an animal helps the main character. In different parts of the world, the helper changes. In Eastern Europe, a fox often helps the man. In Southern Asia, the helper might be an ape or a jackal. In the Philippines, the helper is often a monkey. Some stories in Northern Europe use a spirit instead. These different versions show how stories travel and change.
