Rumpelstiltskin is a famous German fairy tale.

It was first collected by the Brothers Grimm in their 1812 edition of Children's and Household Tales. The story follows a magical imp who possesses the ability to spin straw into gold. This tale explores themes of impossible tasks, difficult bargains, and the power of a secret name. It is a classic example of how a single piece of information can change a person's fate.

The plot begins with a boastful miller. He tells a king that his daughter can spin straw into gold. Some versions suggest this was a careless boast about her blonde hair. The king believes the claim and locks the girl in a tower room. The room contains only a spinning wheel and piles of straw. The king demands she complete the task by morning or face execution.

In other versions, the king threatens to lock her in a dungeon or punish her father instead.

When the girl loses all hope, a small, imp-like man appears. He offers to spin the straw into gold for her. In return, he asks for her jewelry. First, he takes a necklace made of glass beads. On the second day, he takes a glass ring. On the third day, the task becomes much larger. The king promises to marry her if she succeeds, but will kill her if she fails. Because she has no more jewelry, the imp demands her firstborn child. She reluctantly agrees to this difficult arrangement.

After the girl becomes queen, her first child is born. The imp returns to claim his payment. The queen offers him all her riches, but he refuses. He offers a final bargain: he will leave if she can guess his name within three days. Some versions limit her to three guesses per day, totaling nine guesses.

The queen searches for the answer and eventually wanders into the woods. She finds a remote mountain cottage where the imp is dancing by a fire.

While watching him, she hears him singing a song. The song reveals his name: Rumpelstiltskin. The German lyrics are: "Heute back ich, morgen brau ich, übermorgen hol ich der Königin ihr Kind. Ach, wie gut ist, dass niemand weiß, dass ich Rumpelstilzchen heiß." This translates to: "Today I bake, tomorrow I brew, the day after I get the Queen's child. How good it is that no one knows that I'm called Rumpelstiltskin."

When the queen reveals his name, the imp loses his temper.

The endings of the story vary across different versions. In the original 1812 edition, the imp ran away angrily and never returned. The 1857 edition contains a more intense ending. In that version, he drives his right foot into the ground until it sinks to his waist. He then pulls his left foot with both hands and tears himself in two.

Other versions describe him falling into a chasm or flying away on a cooking ladle.

The name Rumpelstiltskin has several possible meanings. It is often explained as "little rattle stilt." The suffix "-chen" is a diminutive, meaning something small. Some researchers suggest "Rumpel" refers to a crumpling noise. This could relate to the creature's small size. Other interpretations link the name to "poltergeist," which is a mischievous spirit.

This name helps define the character as a small, noisy, and magical being.

This story is part of a much larger global tradition. Researchers from Durham University and NOVA University Lisbon trace its origins back 4,000 years. The tale is classified in the Aarne–Thompson–Uther Index as type ATU 500, "The Name of the Supernatural Helper." Similar patterns appear in many cultures. Examples include "Tom Tit Tot" in the UK and "Whuppity Stoorie" in Scotland.

There are even versions in Japan, Russia, and South America. This shows that the idea of a magical name is a universal human concept.
